Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was a designer and architect and a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture. It keeps amazing me over and over that so many designs that are in fact “old” by now, are still so “new”. Here is one:

In Bangkok it is a good idea to use the so called skytrain, or BTS as it is often called. We bought ourselves a smartcard to use since we moved around quite a bit. However, we didn’t get to finish the amount we placed on the card, but that’s a completely other story. It has not much to do with design, but if I say the word Red you might know what I mean. Or not. But that’s besides the point. What I am trying to get to here is that the cards we got had the cutest images on them. Elephants on some and flowers on some. Supposedly painted by elephants. I don’t know about that, whicheverwayitis it sure is cute.

When looking into it a bit more I understand that the BTS Corporation most of the time (always) has different design of their cards, supporting causes or informing about something. And a splash of marketing I am sure. Great idea though!

Recently I came home from some travelling. I’ve been both west and east. West coast of the U.S. and to South East Asia. Two wonderful trips I might add. However, in Bangkok I attended the BIG Fair at Bitec. They had the most interesting hall – The Design Hall – yeah, you guessed it. I was in heaven!
I will from time to time introduce to you some of the products I found and that I really liked.
As soon as I entered the Design Hall I came upon these cushion seats. First I sat in this one.
…and then I tried this one. I know, I know, they are just the same. Same comfyness to them too. But they look a little bit different. Their measurements are 80 x 80 x 30 cm and they are made out of natural fibers. I don’t know exactly from what these are made of but the company that produces these use natural fibers such as water hyacinth, mulberry paper, cotton and hemp. My guess is that these were made out of hemp. Loved them. Loooved them. If I wanted to buy them I had to buy USD3000 worth of ‘em. And they were priced at approx USD100 each. That’s a lot of cushion seats. I only need two. Maybe three or maximum four. So that was that with this cusion seat dream.

The company that designs and produces these, among others, articles is Ayodhya. Founded in 1994 and offer unique designs of handicraft made of natural fibers (as mentioned before). Pleeeeease, pleasse someone give me those cushion seats. Pleasse!!
Mandarin Oriental Barcelona öppnade i november 2009. 98 rum får plats i det här hotellet som är en gammal bank och ligger på Passeig de Gràcia. Vem har designat? Ingen mindre än Patricia Urquiola. Jag vill åka till Barcelona. NU! Jag vill gå gången upp till lobbyn. Jag vill sjunka ner i en av de sköna fåtöljerna och mysa. Jag vill mysa på balkongen innan jag sover gott. Och jag vill avsluta min resa med att ta en drink på terassen och titta på solnedgången över Barcelonas hustak. Är det för mycket begärt?
Scandic Hotels har en reklamkampanj där man föreslår en “staycation”. Jag gillade ordet så jag var ju bara tvungen att kolla upp det här med Staycation.
Tydligen betyder det, enligt Urban Dictionary, “a vacation at home or close to home”. Det kanske blir det nya – staycation. Jag hittade till och med en sajt som föreslår olika staycations – www.supereco.com.

Årets möbel 2010 är Bidoun. En ottoman designad av Katrin Greiling. Inspirationen har hon fått från beduinlägren i öknen utanför Dubai. Katrin är en ung formgivare som ursprungligen kommer från Tyskland men som nu bor i Stockholm och pendlar till Dubai där hon designar för designföretaget Traffic. Själv tycker jag att formen är spännande. Jag gillar det beduinska som möter det västerländska. Vi får nog se mer av sådant framöver gissar jag.

Bokja Design drivs av två passionerade själar som funnit en alldeles speciell kreativ väg att vandra. Hoda Baroudi och Maria Hibri är libanesiskorna bakom succen Bokja Design. I de gamla delarna av Beirut har de 200 kvadratmeter med helt underbara vintagemöbler med nya kläder. Bokja använder sig av fantastiska gamla mönster och hantverksskicklighet i länderna längs silkesvägen – The Silk Road.
Jag var ju bara tvungen att ha med lite Artek-produkter nu när man vet att Proventus har ägarintressen. Ha ha. När jag såg lite av Arteks produkter slog det mig att ..aha…Ikea. Där har jag ju sett liknande produkter. Sagt och gjort. Googlade lite grand och hittade det här. Bland annat. Eftersom Artek vill skydda sina bilder kan jag inte ladda ner dem bättre än så här. Sorry. Men man ser ju iallafall att de är väldigt lika varandra (tänk dig att du verkligen behöver glasögon, typ alltid, du har -5 eller nåt i styrka – sen tar du av dig glasögonen och tittar på Artekstolarna. Då ser det nog ut så här.). Och Ikea, ja de bryr sig nog inte om de blir kopierade. Fast vem vill ha en kopia av en kopia? Det räcker väl isåfall med en kopia. Typ.
